About

Reserve Bank
Of Zimbabwe

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) is the country’s central bank, mandated to promote monetary and financial stability in support of sustainable and inclusive economic growth. The Bank plays a critical role in preserving the value of the local currency, maintaining confidence in the financial system, and fostering economic resilience.

Our Mission

To ensure price and financial stability through prudent, innovative, and evidence-based monetary policies that preserve the value of the local currency, while promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth for the prosperity and resilience of Zimbabwe.

Our Vision

To be an innovative, world-class central bank.

Our History

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe traces its origins to the Bank of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which was established in March 1956 as the central bank for the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The Bank succeeded the Central Currency Board, which previously held the sole authority to issue currency.

Initially, the Bank operated from the Vincent (now Mapondera) Building in Harare, which currently houses the High Court of Zimbabwe. In June 1957, it relocated to Bank Chambers at 76 Samora Machel Avenue to serve as its headquarters.

As the Bank’s operations and staff expanded, the need arose for a modern and purpose-built facility. This led to the construction of the current headquarters complex at 80 Samora Machel Avenue. The building, regarded as one of the most technologically advanced in Zimbabwe at the time, was officially opened on 31 May 1996.
