Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in partnership with Ministry of Primary & Secondary Education
(MoPSE) has introduced the Schools Monetary Policy Challenge (SMPC). The SMPC is a
dynamic competition giving schools the chance to compete for the prestigious title of Child
Governor!
This is an opportunity for students to dive into real-world monetary policy issues, sharpen
financial knowledge, and showcase their school’s talent on a national stage. To kickstart this
exciting program, RBZ this morning hosted an induction workshop for all MoPSE provincial
leadership representatives.
Speaking during the workshop, the RBZ Chief of Staff in the Office of the Governor, Dr.
Moris B Mpofu, highlighted that the programme aligns with the Bank’s core mandate while
also addressing key national priorities.
“This initiative is anchored on key national priorities. Financial inclusion remains central to
the Bank’s policy agenda and is a key pillar of the National Development Strategy 2, while
monetary policy lies at the core of the Bank’s mandate. Through the SMPC, we are bringing
these important concepts closer to learners in a practical and engaging manner” said Dr.
M.B. Mpofu.
In his remarks, the Acting Permanent Secretary Mr. Mudyiwa highlighted the need to equip
learners with practical knowledge on inflation, exchange rates, interest rates, and the role of
monetary policy in everyday life. He urged education leaders to ensure that the programme
reaches schools across all provinces and becomes embedded in classroom learning.
Registration of interested schools is underway and an official launch date to be announced
in due course.
The competition will follow a layered structure, beginning at cluster level and progressing
through district and provincial stages, culminating in a national final featuring 10 schools
representing each province.
